
As the gold is brought in, Artemus and Jim use the knife to get Jim free. Ball reveals that he guessed Jim was going to load the gold train with armed men to fight his own, but Ball has prepared explosives on the tracks to kill any opposition. During their capture, Artemus uses a ruse to obtain a knife. However, Jim is using this ploy to fool General Ball into revealing his hand, but Ball suspects this and orders Jim, Artemus, Sheila, and Tennyson (Jim and Artemus’s butler) to be kidnapped. The next day, Jim and Artemus report back to town (in the presence of General Ball) and Jim suggests that the gold be paid to the outlaws. They report this to their leader, revealed as none other than General Ball himself. Jim runs off, but the outlaws were aware of Jim’s presence and were deliberately feeding him misinformation.

Jim, Artemus, and American Knife track down the outlaw’s camp and Jim eavesdrops on a planning session detailing an ambush at the end of the rail line. Jim apologizes and agrees to cooperate with the Cheyenne to uncover the murderer’s true identities. They give chase and Jim is captured by American Knife.Īmerican Knife swears that the Cheyenne aren’t responsible for the attacks, and reveals the body of one of the assailants as a white man disguised as a Cheyenne. Artemus infiltrates the railroad gangs he and Jim witness one of the attacks and it appears that the Cheyenne are the perpetrators. Parnell’s fellow railroad worker imprisons Jim and Sheila, but Artemus releases them. Jim investigates the murders and runs into Sheila Parnell, a woman whose father was among the victims of the attacks. Upon arrival, Jim runs into an old friend, General Ball, whose hand was lost in the Civil War. The government suspects the culprits to be Cheyenne Native Americans, led by the stern, intelligent medicine man called American Knife. Jim and Artemus are brought in to a developing railroad line to help combat a protection racket five men are slaughtered daily unless a huge sum of gold is paid to the murderers.
